Fall 2024 MSSL Division II: Inches from Glory
Our first season in the Maryland Super Soccer League Division II was a test of resolve, grit, and character—from the opening kickoff to the final whistle.
Thrown straight into the fire, Sláinte Athletic found ourselves navigating injuries, roster challenges, and a rising level of competition week in and week out. And among those challenges, we faced off against a well-drilled rival in Bowleys Athletic—a fierce matchup against the eventual league champions that set the tone for just how high the bar had been raised.
But we refused to back down.
This campaign was defined by resilience. A 90th-minute winner against NPC Futbol became an instant classic—a moment of pure determination. Over the course of the season, we tallied 23 goals and earned a 6-1-4 record, good enough for a hard-fought second place finish in a stacked table.
Logan Funk, transformed from center back to goal machine, led the team in scoring, while Drew Meyers once again topped the assist chart, cementing his role as the creative engine of the squad.
And yet, the cruel side of football made its mark.
A last-minute penalty against Ambit10n FC in the final match snatched away our shot at promotion—a heartbreaking ending to a campaign filled with fire and fight.
We missed out by inches. But what we gained—belief, unity, and battle-hardened experience—can’t be measured on a table.
Heads high. Spring awaits.
And we’re coming back stronger.
