Owning the Flank: Drew Meyers is Sláinte’s Unsung Engine

Since arriving during the 2024 DMV Silver Summer Copa, Drew Meyers has established himself as one of Sláinte Athletic’s most consistent and commanding players—a vocal leader whose game speaks just as loud from the edge of the pitch.

It started with an assist in his debut against Ittihad FC, and by year’s end, Meyers led the club in total assists across all competitions. His 2024 stat line speaks for itself:

  • 1 assist in 2 Summer Copa matches

  • 1 goal, 2 assists in the Fall BCRP campaign

  • 1 goal, 3 assists in Fall MSSL Division II play

But Meyers’ value can’t be summed up with numbers alone. What makes him special is his ability to adapt, to elevate, and to anchor the game from positions that often go unnoticed. Whether deployed at right back, left back, or on either wing, Meyers brings a tireless work rate, sharp decision-making, and a defensive edge that sets a tone for everyone around him.

His standout performance came on Matchday 10 of the Fall MSSL season—a wild 3-3 draw against Ambit10n FC—where he delivered two crucial assists in one of the most intense matches of the year. It was a game that showcased everything Meyers brings to the table: composure, precision, and intensity when it matters most.

Meyers’ football journey started well before Sláinte. “I started my soccer career with the Baltimore Bays, played for various club teams, and finished with Severna Park,” he explains. “I competed at Catonsville High, where I played against and beat some current Sláinte players, and then went on to Howard Community College for my freshman year. There, I helped the team reach the national championships and finish 7th in the country. I wrapped up my education and playing career at Stevenson University.”

That journey—especially his first year at community college—shaped how he approaches the game today. “I’ve never been the biggest player around, but it was a different game in college. I had to adapt to being comfortable under pressure and handling players who were much bigger than me. There were definitely some humbling moments, but it made me a better player.”

It also helped shape the versatile, dependable version of Meyers that Sláinte now leans on. “To be honest, I’ve always moved around the field,” he says. “From playing sweeper when I was little, to striker/winger in high school, outside back for club, and then outside back in college—I’ve seemed to have found my home pretty much anywhere out wide.”

Off the field, Meyers is driven by his love for the game and his early influences. “When I was younger I loved to watch highlights of Neymar. It’s what made me go into my garage at home and just learn different skills and different ways to enjoy the game. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve really enjoyed watching players like Reece James (when healthy) and Trent Alexander-Arnold. I really admire how they can whip a ball into the box.”

Drew’s connection to Sláinte was quick and natural. “I knew a few of the guys on the team already. Originally I was just guest playing, but I really enjoyed playing with everyone and I wanted to be a part of what AJ was trying to create with the team. After the Summer Copa, I decided I’d fully commit. The journey so far has been great, and it’s been awesome to see how quickly the club is growing on and off the field.”

That commitment has paid off. Meyers has become a player the team counts on—a responsibility he doesn’t take lightly. “It means a lot. I really try my best to be involved with everyone on the team. The closer we get together off the field, the better we will be on the field. I know if I’m giving it my all to be the best player I can be, then my teammates will do the same.”

His favorite Sláinte moment so far? “Beating Baltimore City in the Morton Cup. Some people were doubting us going into that game, but we came in and had a convincing 2-0 win. It was a true team effort.”

In the locker room, Drew takes plenty of banter—but also sets the tone. “It’s been like that my entire life. I put it on myself. My motto is, if you can’t take some banter, then don’t dish it out. It’s all good fun and nobody takes it personally. But on the field, I always play with intensity and make sure I’m vocal. That can be getting stuck in for an early game tackle (sometimes fouls), or hyping up a teammate for making a good play. All of those things add up in a 90-minute game.”

When asked what Sláinte means to him, he’s clear: “This club represents what a team should be—accountability, fun, ambition, and competitiveness. It sparked back my enjoyment for playing competitively. I want to win every trophy, promotion, and game possible.”

As Sláinte pushes through the Spring 2025 campaign, Drew Meyers remains a foundational piece of the puzzle. A player who doesn’t just play the game—he owns his space in it.
